About
I’ve had a love for the sports car since I was a kid in the 60s & 70s. It all started with exposure to the amazing designs of Marcello Gandini, Giorgetto Giugiaro, Nuvolare Bertone, Pininfarina, and more. Lamborghini Miura, Marzal, Urraco, Jalpa, & the iconic Countach. Porsche was a major player in that love as the mighty 917 lit a fire, looking like a spacecraft from the future. Swoopy curves and long-tail made for an amazing race car, dominating Le Mans and races beyond. The Carrera RSR, the 930 Turbo, and the ever conquering Porsche 935 are some of my all-time favorites. I am the Admin for Porsche 935 The Legend on Facebook as well. The 935 is one of the most successful race cars of all time and kept at it through the early 80s until the Porsche 956/962 rolled out.
The 90s brought plenty of good sports cars; the Porsche 959, the Ferrari F50, Jaguar XJ 220, Lamborghini Diablo, and the Acura NSX. But the real King of the Hill is the McLaren F1. Still the fastest normally aspirated sports car ever built. It would take 12 years, 16 cylinders, and 4 turbos to beat the 240.1 MPH top speed achieved by McLaren XP5. And still, the F1 would seat 3 comfortably and be as tractable as an Acura NSX, which is the spiritual predecessor to the F1. Gordon Murray thought well enough of the NSX that it was the basis for comfort and driveability through normal situations, cities, parkways, parking lots, and driveways. The McLaren F1 for me is the pinnacle of design. Oh sure, there are plenty of cars that have surpassed it in many aspects, but it still reigns supreme. So much so that the original $1M+ entry price for an F1 has skyrocketed well into the double-digit millions. Dream on.
vsixdesign was founded in 1996 and the name comes from the idea of dropping a turbocharged v6 engine into the rear of a Honda Civic hatchback and emulating the Renault R5 Turbo. An amazing hot-hatch that appeared in the James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again, that Barbara Carrera drove. I still think it is a fun idea and would love to work with some real enthusiasts on the project. 🙂
I started learning Photoshop back in the early 90s when I worked for a major computer retailer. It was on an Apple computer at the time on the sales floor. Photoshop Version 2.5.1 to be exact and it was great compared to anything else that existed at the time. Microsoft Paint and Apple’s black and white Draw programs were rudimentary at best. Photoshop was awe-inspiring, albeit not feature-filled like today. In response to a fellow McLaren fan, I decided that I could illustrate a McLaren F1 LM. So in 2013, I set about to do just that, and here I am today with more than 30 McLaren F1 illustrations under my belt. So here I will share my work with you.
